Avantouinti -
Ah-vahn-toh-oo-in-tee
Avantouinti is the Finnish term for “winter swimming,” referring to the practice of dipping into a hole cut through the ice of a frozen lake or sea—often paired with a hot sauna.
Research suggests the cold exposure can boost circulation, reduce inflammation, and elevate mood as blood vessels constrict in the water and dilate afterward. Cold immersion also triggers hormones that improve stress tolerance, support immune function, and may enhance sleep and relaxation.
In Finland, avantouinti is seen not just as a bracing challenge, but as a wellness ritual—where a brief shock to the body is followed by a lasting sense of calm and rejuvenation.
